Langtang is one of the least trekked, yet one of the most beautiful, trekking areas. Located north of the Kathmandu Valley, the route goes through traditional and ethnic villages and untouched forests on the way to the peaks of Langtang-Lirung. This trek reveals the contrast between the Hindu culture of the Kathmandu Valley and the Buddhist culture to the immediate north of Kathmandu.
Langtang Ganja-la Pass trekking is really very challenging for adventure people. While we ahead our trek to Ganja-la Pass (5130m), there will be no availability of teahouses for 3-4 days, so that we have to prepare our things ie; tent, food and equipemtns fully. The pass is mostly blocked by snow, so local inquiries about its condition, good equipment and mountaineering experience guide and sherpas are necessary for safe crossing.
From the pass the views across the valley to the peaks of the Langtang ranges are wonderful panoramic. After cross the Ganja La pass, we will arrive in the Helambu village which excludes a Tibetan feel and you will see fields enclosed by stone walls as well as herds of yaks, the most important animal for the people here.
Arrive to Kathmandu, an exciting and memorable experience with the panoramic view of snow-capped Himalayan range greets your sight.
Independent Himalayan Adventure's Airport Representative will meet you at the airport and take you to your hotel. After arrival to hotel, Short briefing and final payment procedures.
Sightseeing of Kathmandu including Pashupatinath, Bouddhanath. Afternoon you may excursion around Kathmandu Durbar Square and Swoyambhunath Stupa too.
Early in the morning offroad drive to Syabru Besi. After driving for 30 kms, we approach pristine villages on the banks of the river Trishuli. We also get to view the enchanting panorama of the Himalaya, including the Annapurnas, Manaslu, Ganesh Himal and the peaks of the Langtang region.
After we leave Syabru besi, soon reach Ghopcha Khola. Terraced fields and dense forest with a variety of plant species like oaks, maple, alder and bamboo open up. We may get to see yellow-throated martin, wild boar, langur monkey, red panda and Himalayan black bear en route. Further on, the trail crosses a stream and a bridge. We pass by several tea shops. As we continue ascending steeply along the trail, we come across a steel suspension bridge at 2000 meters. The route further crosses to the north bank of the Langtang Khola amid the spectacular vistas of cascading waterfalls and opens into scrub oak forest. On reaching 2748 meters, we arrive at Lama Hotel where we conclude the trek for the day.
From lama hotel, we continue the ascent above the Langtang Khola. As the trail progresses, it becomes steeper. We have the most exotic sights of Langtang Lirung lying at 7246 meter. The trail leads to a log bridge and on climbing further we come across lush meadows of Ghoda Tabela (Horse Stable) at 3000 meters. We will see several lodges and a police check post. Further on the route opens up into a wide valley of yak pastures and scattered Tamang villages with water-driven mills and prayer wheels. We arrive at Langtang village after crossing a stream and reaching up a height of 3500 meters. Langtang village is the headquarters for Langtang National Park and has flat-roofed Tibetan style houses, hotels and cultivated lands yielding buckwheat, potatoes, wheat, turnips, barley etc.
The trail skirts gradually through rich yak pastures and interesting traditional villages of Muna to Singdun. We cross a wooden cantilever bridge and reach a wide valley after climbing a moraine. Finally, on ascending the mountain passes, we arrive at Kyagjing Gompa. There is a small monastery and a government-operated cheese factory, where from all cheeses brought to Kathmandu.
Acclmatization in Kyanjing Gompa valley (hiking to Kyanjing Ri, Tserko Ri (5033 meters).
Climb up through a rhododendron forest and junipers towards the Ngegang yak pastures.
The ascent to the pass is quite tricky, following streams at first, and continuing over snow and rocks. We scramble the last 100 meters on a steep and snowy slope. The pass offers an impressive panoramic view of the Langtang Lirung and the snowy summits of the Tibetan boarder, amongst which rises the Shisha Pangma (8013m). Then the trail plunges steeply over moraines.
Ascents give way to descents along the ridge trail around 6 hours.
We reach a pass towering at 4080 meters, offering a great view over the Himalayas. We now start our descent towards Helambu through fir tree and rhododendron forests.
The ridge trail criss-crosses streams and waterfalls, and offers open views in all directions with the southern foothills of Nepal fading towards the plains of Terai.
A knee-wobbling journey as we lose altitude quickly, descending to the Melamchi Kola pul. This day either we stay over there or take a Bus/Car to back to Kathmandu.
