Set in Nepal's wild west the Dolpo region has a lot to offer the trekker who wants to see something different to the better known areas in the east. Experience culture and religion that is unique to this part of the Himalaya. The landscape too is totally different to that seen elsewhere in Nepal. Rugged mountain ranges give way to barren rolling hills; tranquil lakes reflect snow capped peaks; isolated monasteries and villages populated by people of Tibetan descent eking out an existence in a harsh, inhospitable climate and deep, virgin forests sheltering birds and animals found only in this region.
Dolpo is located inside the Shey-Phoksundo National Park. It lies to the north of the Dhaulagiri Range and towards the Tibetan Plateau. Here one can find a finely preserved ecosystem that consists of variety of plants and wildlife, including the blue sheep and the elusive snow leopard. The view of the Kanjiroba peak, Phoksumdo Lake and the Dhaulagiri massif is one of the most rewarding moments of this trek. A visit to the Phoksumdo Gompa- dedicated to the ancient Bon Po religion is a memorable experience. This trek is for people who are exceptionally fit and prepared to take what Himalayan wilderness trekking has to offer. Time has stood still here for centuries as the inhabitants of Tibetan stock continue to live, cultivate and commerce the way they have done since time immemorial. The finally preserved eco -system encompasses a wild and wonderful variety of plants and wildlife, including the blue sheep and now leopard.
