The trek to Annapurna Base camp also popularly known as Annapurna Sanctuary; is perhaps one of the most beautiful in the world. The combination of easy walking and majestic scenery makes it a trekker's paradise. Starting from Pokhara, climb to Naudanda (nine hills) and gain elevation gradually through Ghandrung and Chhomrong. Then follow the Modi Khola valley through thick bamboo and rhododendron forests to the Annapurna Base camp at 4200 m.
The Name “Annapurna” is literally from Sanskrit "Goddess of Harvest" which believes as a goddess of fertility and agriculture. Mount Annapurna is the 10th highest mountain in the world. Annapurna is a series of peaks in the Himalaya, a 55km long Massif with highest point Annapurna I stands at 8091m (26538ft). It is located east of a great gorge cut through the Himalaya by the most famous Kali Gandaki River the deepest Gorge in the world and which separates it from the Mount Dhaulagiri (8167m). The Region Annapurna is surrounded by many Himalayan ranges which include the Annapurna range, Dhaulagiri and Machhapuchhre - the famous fish-tail mountain that dominates the skyline above Pokhara.
This region is protected by Annapurna conservation Area Project (ACAP) which was established in 1986 under the guidance of the King Mahendra Trust for Nature Conservation. The project covers the whole Annapurna range, covers an area of 7629 sq. km. and is home to over 100000 residents of different cultural and linguistic groups. ACAP is rich in biodiversity and is a treasure house for 1226 species of flowering plants, 102 mammals, 474 birds, 39 reptiles and 22 amphibians. In an inventive advance to environmental protection, it was declared a "conservation area" instead of a national park. A large number of people live within the protected region. About two-thirds of the trekkers in Nepal visit the Annapurna region. The area is easily accessible, hotels in the hills are plentiful, and treks here offer good scenery of both high mountains and lowland villages.
A slightly different return route through Landrung, Dhampus and Hyangja Tibetan Refugee camp reveals to you a mix of culture quite possibly unparalleled on any other trek. This region falls within the Annapurna Conservation Area, a project for environmental and cultural protection, accommodating both native and foreign visitor needs.
